
Avery Dennison launched PrismaPro color paint protection film in June 2026, positioning an 8.5 mil TPU construction around a dry-apply installation method. The launch matters beyond one brand. In my view, it confirms that color PPF competition is moving away from color cards alone and toward the complete installer experience.
Why this is real industry news
Traditional PPF installation is strongly associated with wet application, while vehicle-wrap installers are familiar with dry application. A product that combines color-change styling, PPF-level protection and a dry workflow attempts to connect two installer communities. Whether an individual film succeeds will depend on real field performance, but the direction is important: manufacturers are now competing on how the material enters a shop, how quickly it can be learned and how predictably it can be installed.
The specification is only the beginning
Avery Dennison's product data sheet lists a 7.5 mil polyurethane face film, an 8.5 mil total construction, acrylic adhesive, a 60-inch by 75-foot roll and dry application. Those are useful facts, but a distributor still needs practical answers: How does tack build during repositioning? How does the film behave on compound curves? What happens at deep recesses and wrapped edges? How much heat is required? How consistent is the color from roll to roll?
The next premium color PPF will be sold as a workflow, not just as a roll of film.
What distributors should test before adding a dry-apply line
- Repositioning and initial tack: evaluate large panels at realistic shop temperatures.
- Stretch recovery: inspect color, gloss and adhesive marks after controlled stretching.
- Edges and recesses: monitor lift after heat cycles, not only immediately after installation.
- Installer learning curve: compare results from experienced wrap installers and wet-apply PPF installers.
- Repairability: confirm how a damaged panel can be replaced and color-matched later.
- Batch control: approve retained samples and define acceptable color variation.
This does not mean wet-apply PPF is obsolete
Dry application is not automatically better for every film, installer or vehicle shape. Wet application still gives experienced PPF installers control they understand, especially with clear films and complex panels. The right conclusion is not that one method will immediately replace the other. The market is likely to support different systems, and professional buyers should judge each system by repeatable installation results rather than novelty.
What this means for private-label brands
A private-label color PPF program now needs more than attractive colors and packaging. It needs a defined installation method, training content, surface-preparation rules, temperature guidance, troubleshooting support and clear warranty boundaries. A distributor that launches twenty colors without installer validation may create more inventory and complaints than growth. I would start with a controlled color range, run full-panel trials and expand only after repeat orders show which colors and workflows actually work.

Major brands are showing that the value of automotive film increasingly includes adhesive design, software, training and shop efficiency. For factories, this is a useful warning: producing a visually impressive film is not enough. For distributors, it is an opportunity to ask better questions and build a range around the installer. Color attracts the customer, but installation consistency protects the margin.
